Grammar 1 : - have / don’t have 有 / 没有

Do you have a banana? du u giang jio bo?

I don’t have a banana. nong bo giang jio.

Grammar 2 : - Chinese Particles

Like Mandarin, particles are essential in Hainanese. Their use greatly affects the meaning and tone of a sentence.

1. 啦 [la]

  • a versatile and conflicting one that can be used to soften tone when conveying a sense of urging or add assertion in a statement. 


2. 吗 [bo]

  •  Used at the end of a statement to turn it into a yes/no question.


3. 了 [liao]

  • Indicates completion or a change of state  with multiple nuanced meanings depending on context.


4. 啊  [a]

  •  used to express emotion, making statements sound friendlier, and soften the tone of questions.


DIALOGUE

  • A : Do you have oranges?

    B : No more. 

    A : Do you have apples?

    B : Yes. it’s here.

    A : It’s really small.

    B : Not small! Very big!

  • A : du u ga bo?

    B : bo liao

    A : du u a bu bo?

    B : u. du jia di.

    A : jin niao la

    B : bo niao la. Jin dua la

  • Substitute with the following:

  • A : Do you have time?

    B : Sorry. I don't have time, not free.

    A : Do you have money?

    B : I have. It’s mom’s.

    A : You have a good life. I don’t even have anything.

  • A : du u di gan bo?

    B : doi bo hi. Bo di gan, bo ai. 

    A : du u ji bor?

    B : nong u ji. Di a ma gai ji。

    A : du jin o mia. gwa mi lo bo.
